Martins Point Plantation encompasses more than 1,000 acres on the Wadmalaw River, part of the Intracoastal Waterway, and Wadmalaw Sound.
It was established in 1989 on the site of a historic plantation that was once the center of agriculture on Wadmalaw. Martins Point Plantation was the first Wadmalaw community to limit development to preserve the rural character of the island, scenic vistas, water quality, wildlife habitat and open space. Community amenities offer an active outdoor lifestyle on land and water. Several miles of riding and hiking trails connect woodlands, fields, the Pond Preserve and the historic cemetery. The launching ramp and park on the Wadmalaw River provides access for canoes, kayaks and motor boats. Wadmalaw Sound offers excellent fishing. The three forested islands in the Island Preserve are accessible from the Wadmalaw River and marsh creeks. The Atlantic Ocean is nine miles downriver and the 350,000 acre ACE Basin begins four miles downriver. A 1990 conservation easement with the Lowcountry Open Land Trust protects the Pond and Island Preserves, the riverfront park and launching ramp and the historic cemetery. Long term property values are preserved by restrictive covenants and architectural guidelines. There are 42 home sites.
